The Underbelly of Consciousness was an EP released on Second Thought Records in 2003, credited to Gregg Jackson, Ross Baker and Carly Griffiths, but without any actual artist name. Long out of print, the record was eventually re-released on Jerky Oats in 2010 as a free download. Conceived and recorded by Gregg and myself in 2003, The Underbelly of Consciousness came from our interests at the time in fusion jazz, krautrock, lo-fi, flamenco, ambient, noise rock and surrealist poetry. Gregg played all of the complex guitar parts and sang, I provided sloppier guitar playing, harmonica, recorder, electronics and spoken words, and Carly contributed the specially painted sleeve images. We later chose the name Captain Busby after the main character in a fittingly semi-untitled poem ("Poems") by Philip O'Connor. Gregg and I are hoping to work together on a second Captain Busby record in the future, perhaps with other musicians or artists.
