Notes:
Originally entitled The Otherness, The Emptiness Of Nothingness
was premiered at the Afisha Festival, 15th May 2004. The track
appears have originated as a remix of Divinity, the rest of which appeared on The
Otherness, which may explain the song's working title. The track
features drums, brass, strings, flutes and a female vocal sample
from Divinity, led around a piano loop.
Gaz explains: "'What track should we put at the beginning of
the album?' - a silence descended on the room as thick and heavy
as engineer Stone Freshwaters' outlawed cigarettes which still
seemed to repeatedly find their way back into the room "OK
it has to be EPIC! it has to be sonic it has to sound like a band
at the height of its game but also a band who use the studio
technology as the ultimate GIZMO - it must sound far out!!"
Thus spoke Stone Freshwaters on his thoughts for the beginning of
the album '.... more than this it has to create a profound bang
but no explosion... in other words it can't give the WHOLE game
away... IMMEDIATELY!! Does anyone understand what I'm talking
about????" Built around a stonking piano riff, sliding
bassline and vintage fat drums provided by Divine Comedy drummer
Tim Weller capped with twisted Hammond from Mikey Rowe (one time
keyboardist with Oasis) the Emptiness of Nothingess fitted all
the criteria. Bingo! The show had begun!"
