Lyrics:
Aaah aaah etc...
(Screaming) Get back... get back!
Notes:
The first single from Dead Cities, My Kingdom's album version (on
the back cover as My Kingdom+) is a darker and more sinister mix
than the EP version,
but also seems a lot messier and less refined too. Lacking most
of the synths and the stunning breakdown-structure of the single
mix, the track is more immediate but confusing on the album. The
track was formed simply by collaging a number of the band's
favourite samples - the Ozric Tentacles guitar sample was swapped
with the band for a copy of Cubase. Gaz explains:
"Brian and I used to survey the rolling park that lay under
our gaze as we sat on a small hillock in the park round the
corner from the studio - it became a tradition to sweep a hand
across the rolling vista like a roman emperor mounted on a
beautiful white stallion and announce "My kingdom". I
was working at home having just set up The Womb, and began
sampling a bit of Morriconen ozric tentacles, etc. The essence of
a track emerged, the elements were taken to Earthbeat and
suddenly with drums taken from another track played on by Richie
from Dif Juz (a band we loved on 4AD) and some vocals snatched by
Brian from a VHS of Dladerunner the track was complete". The
track first appeared in the 1995 Peel Session with a faster, more
drum'n'bass-like breakbeat behind it.
The mix of My Kingdom that
appears on ISDN Show is a mix of the album version and the EP version. It features elements of
different mixes of the song, but most obviously it features the
synth breakdown that the EP version has. At five minutes, many
believe it should have been the mix on Dead Cities. The track on
ISDN Show is incorrectly titled "Womb" due to the out
of sync tracklist.
On the band's best of compilation, Teachings From The Electronic
Brain, the version featured was an exclusive five minute edit of My Kingdom
(Part 1).
