In a similar manner as Vit and Vertical Pig on Lifeforms, Dirty Shadows opens with a couple of minutes of scene-setting ambience and effects, before a sample from The Exorcist II, which commences the main part of the track, an epic-sounding spacious piece with light percussion and a piano/synth melody. The live version, recorded for Radio 1's Essential Mix, featured Robert Fripp providing a number of guitar textures to the piece live from the Earthbeat studio. Most of these, however, were removed from the version on ISDN, as they managed to obscure most parts of the song.
