| | | | | | | | The Blackbirds' Revenge acts as a halfway house between my previous Second Thought project and my future releases. Stylistically, it picks up elements of some later Second Thought releases - particularly the more prominent use of acoustic instruments and vocals on Leaf Pass and Another Setting Sun - although the focus is very different, with the music written and arranged for guitar, melodica, piano, voice, glockenspiel, organ and field recordings, both in their live form and electronically treated. The album was pieced together from various recording blocks throughout summer and autumn 2011, with a new mix of a much older track, 'England; Sydney 3PM', thrown in for good measure.
The longform electro-acoustic nature of some of the tracks is the biggest callback to Second Thought, particularly on the darker cityscape sound paintings. The shorter, more acoustic tracks look to the future, such as the album's one piece to feature lyrics, 'Carparks and Churches'; many of these pieces have a bittersweet, pastoral feel and are more personal in nature.
The title of track 04 is respectfully taken from 'Transmit the Ends' by This Et Al.
